Save African Penguins

February 17, 2025

The African Penguin is on the brink of extinction. This species, whose population has declined 97% over the last century due to overfishing, habitat loss, and climate change, could vanish from the wild within the next 10 years if current trends persist.

In 2024, the African Penguin was classified as “Critically Endangered” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, the world’s most comprehensive inventory of the global conservation status of plant and animal species.

Commercial fishing deprives African Penguins of their primary food source —sardines and anchovies — leaving them starving and unable to breed. We must act quickly to save this iconic symbol from extinction.

Blue Marine is working alongside partners The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) and BirdLife South Africa to halt this decline, calling on the South African Government to protect penguin fish stocks and breeding grounds from destruction.

Sign the petition now to urge the South African government to protect the African Penguin and preserve the health of our ocean for future generations.
