Blue Marine Foundation is expanding its Education Unit, and we have a new exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and driven Education Lead. The Education Unit supports Blue Marine’s wider marine conservation portfolio and the successful candidate will be responsible for the strategic development and promotion of Blue Marine’s educational outreach, including resources and materials, some of which is now online and in digital formats.

Salary:  £35000 – £45,000 per annum based on knowledge and experience, plus competitive benefits package.

Hours:  35 per week, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

Contract: Permanent, Full time

Location: Somerset House, London or flexible with some time expected in the London office

Benefits: A generous benefits package is offered, including an optional subsidy of £2,000 per year which is currently available to employees attending the office at least two days per week.

Role & Responsibilities:

  • Strategic development of the Education Unit’s outreach, identifying opportunities to maximise and build impact against the charity’s strategic objectives
  • Drive vision and delivery, raising the profile and ambition of Blue Marine’s education work
  • Develop innovative and visionary methods of education, for quantifiable behaviour change and improved ocean literacy
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of all education initiatives
  • Manage the global distribution of the wealth of resources already in the Unit’s portfolio, including assets and educational toolkits, such as ‘The Sea We Breathe’
  • Lead on development and roll-out of the Ocean Observatories
  • Support education programmes that are established across Blue Marine’s project portfolio
  • Manage the outreach deliverables for Blue Marine’s largest projects – specifically our Convex Seascape Survey and Solent Seascape Project
  • Support the Communications team with developing materials including, but not limited to, assets/films/infographics/animations for Blue Marine’s educational initiatives
  • Support the Fundraising team with securing Unit funding
  • Liaise with project managers to co-ordinate educational site visits, where necessary
  • Deliver presentations and workshops at schools, conservation groups, Universities and external events
  • Develop marine conservation educational resources where required (apps, booklets, online experiences and classroom resources)
  • Provide supporting materials for internships where appropriate
  • Establish a strategy for a Youth Ambassador Programme
  • Update and expand community/outreach partnership databases

Essential qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Relevant degree
  • Extensive proven experience working within a similar position at a senior level within education and/or conservation/science education
  • A strong understanding of effective science and/or conservation education
  • Proven ability todeliver complex messaging to external stakeholders within tight deadlines
  • Personable, confident and collaborative
  • Experience in confidently delivering presentations and in public-speaking
  • Experience and confidence in presenting to funders and partners
  • Proven ability to adjust communication style to fit a variety of audiences
  • Self-driven and resilient with experience working in high-paced environments
  • Comfortable working in a hybrid manner in the delivery of presentations
  • Ability to manage your own time effectively
  • Valid driver’s licence and willingness to undertake background check to work with youth
  • Able to role model behaviour in line with the values of Blue Marine

Desirable skills and experience:

  • Prior experience in marine conservation outreach and education
  • Strong understanding of effective community education
  • Confident with basic video editing and social media
  • Prior experience working with children/students
  • Familiarity with UK curriculum
  • Experience using media editing software and InDesign (or other graphics software)
  • Knowledge of project monitoring and evaluation
