Fisheries

Saildrone has initiated an unprecedented mission to map 29,300 square nautical miles of the Cayman Islands’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) using a 20-metre Saildrone Surveyor USV in a ‘first of its kind’ mission.

Tensions between the UK and Argentina over the Falklands are growing once again, and the Falkland Islands government is already in talks with a UK-based marine contractor to take over a floating port project, to which Argentina has voiced opposition to.

Conservation

Marine Protection

Several federal officials and departments in the US Court of International Trade are being sued over their failure to implement the import provisions of the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA).

Scientists have identified 30 new areas critical for conserving biodiversity in the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica. Without greater protection to limit human activities in these areas, native wildlife could face significant population declines.
