Rise of the tuna: BBC Rare Earth

Jess Rattle, our head of investigations speaking about the overfishing of Indian Ocean tuna on the BBC Radio 4 Rare Earth podcast.

She says, “These are wild animals, and they are not an infinite renewable resource unless they are fished sustainably.”

Since 2018, we have been monitoring the EU’s industrial tuna fishing fleet and have shown that their vessels frequently switch of their Automatic Identification System (AIS), ‘going dark’ for months at a time.

Shockingly, the London insurance industry is enabling this behaviour by providing them with the insurance cover they need to operate.
