Mackerel could disappear from menus after a leading marine charity advised restaurants and supermarkets to stop selling most of Britain’s catch.
Last month the High Court dismissed a case by the Blue Marine Foundation, which was suing the government for setting catch limits higher than scientific advice. The charity has said it will appeal against the dismissal.
Charles Clover, Blue Marine co-founder and senior advisor, highlighted: “This judgment has condoned irresponsibility. It says that ministers have the discretion to make bad and irresponsible decisions. Either the Fisheries Act 2020 is a very bad law or it is not being applied properly. We still believe it is the latter.”
